Liftoff of Love
Mom let me know last week that Penn is going to be on the new season of "Dancing With The Stars". He's been training for a little while and has already lost around 50 lbs. He also had something like restylane to smooth lines in his face (in correspondence with him, he tells me they're just "small injectibles"). Of course, I can't wait to see it. Who do they pair with a guy who's 6'6"? But he's really working hard.
If you've ever seen them (and if you haven't, you NEED TO SEE THEM LIVE), they've been doing this piece called "Liftoff of Love/Ripoff of Love" since the 80s, and it still kills. It's one of the tricks they do regular-like, and then again, such that they expose how it's done. And the music, custom written for them and for this piece by Gary Stockdale (as is all their music) is brilliant. And Penn always busts some moves in this one. Here's an older version with more dancing (and a slightly smoother-voiced Penn). Make sure you listen to the lyrics:
And a newer version with a heavier Penn (not anymore!):
Love this trick. Love them. And I'm rooting for Penn (who has a new-ish video blog).

Today I discovered this site. Brilliant, adorable, hilarious animation.

Shall we send you some Oreos?
Someone sent an email to DD today that said:
"Apparently chemicals make cookies taste good.
Yours taste bad.
Hippies suck."
This is hilarious because although the DD products are indeed preservative-free and all-natural, they're aren't vegan or anything, and do contain very real eggs, sugar, butter and WHITE FLOUR (horrors!), and are, in fact, delicious.
Also, I can attest to the fact that the company does not consist of a few hippies in Birkenstocks making cookies and brownies in their communal kitchen. In fact, it's a multi-million dollar company with a huge warehouse, a separate baking facility, a large office above the baking facility, and a dynamic powerhouse of a president.
So...not sure if this was a joke or not (the writer didn't respond to an email asking what product he/she had tried), but it's pretty hilarious.
Hippies suck indeed.

from Esquire's New Laws of Casual Style
- There is a name for men (and women and children*) who can pull off wearing sports jerseys. They're called professional athletes.
- The closest a man should come to touching denim shorts is helping a woman out of them.
- The best jeans have five pockets. The best khakis have four. Anything more or less and you're asking for trouble. Oh, and 1998 called: It wants its cargo pants back.
- Unless he's s a chef, a gardener, or a jolly fat man from Holland, no one should ever wear clogs in his daily life. Same goes for Crocs.
- Speaking of: We're not sure what Americans did to deserve Crocs, but whatever it is, we're sorry. We're really, really sorry.

texting with Angie, last night.
Angie: Eeee! I'm with John Mayer right now!
Me: What?? I heart him.
Angie: I heart him too! I'm at the Grammys rehearsal.
Me: Sigh. I want to meet him. Is he wearing the Borat thong?
Angie: LOL, I would risk taking a picture if he was! We may get to interview him. Very excited.
Me: Eee! Let me know!
Angie: No to the John Mayer interview. But I got to see him! He's so pretty!
Me: Pam and Michael thinks he looks like cro magnon man. They are so wrong.
Angie: No way! He's gorgeous! Even better looking in person!
Me: You're killin' me here.

LA Report
Productive and fun trip. Let's see if I can condense it:
Flights to were cramped and uncomfortable.
My nieces are amazing. They are so smart, funny, considerate, candid, talented. Whatever P and M are doing, they're doing right. They have their occasional moods and insecurities (it took me a long time to get Sawyer to play guitar for me, even though she's played for me MANY times before), but overall, incredible kids.
Saw several areas, including Pasadena (where I finally tried some Pinkberry that I'd been wanting to try for over a year, before people really knew about it. My family all hates it, but I thought it was pretty good, though not nearly as amazing as they'd have you think), Burbank, Media Center (where a Thai boba tea EXPLODED on my white and brown jacket, and Camille wasn't available to give me emergency cleaning advice), El Canada, Griffith Park, Topanga Canyon, Calabasas, Studio City, and Simi Valley, among others.
Had lots of good food - sushi, Mexican (mmm, ahi tuna tacos!), Chinese, Indian, deli and...The Stinking Rose.
Went hiking with Pam and walking with Pam and Sawyer.
Got a tour of CBS and the lot from Dave and Angie (with Pam). Talked for a while with some of the graphics people there, and watched part of a newscast.
Went to Griffith Observatory with Pam, Dave and Angie.
Had an informational interview/lunch with John, the creative director at this company. He's the cousin of my friend's husband, and she thought we would hit it off. My sister went along, since I didn't have access to a car that day. John was great. Showed us around the offices, where they do all sorts of production and promotion. He was open, dynamic and informative and seemed like he'd be a good personal and professional contact. We talked about how I could utilize my abilities there, what it's like to transition from the east coast, etc. He also gave me a voiceover resource guide for the area.
Had lunch with my friend Brian, who is a musician-turned-film/TV editor. SO nice to see him. He's done well out there and really loves it. For a few reasons, however, he and his wife and their son will be moving back to this area in the next year. But he reminded me how many fabulous people are/can be out there, and how important it is to be around them. He feels like it's a good place to reinvent yourself. He reminded me that I'd given him (in his duo with Jason) their first gig in Boston, so they had a "soft spot for" (me). Aw. Something cool: though Jason and Brian stopped performing in 1998, they still sell consistently on iTunes, and one of the band members of Linkin Park cites Harrod & Funck as one of his major musical influences. And rightfully so - H&F were incredible.
I borrowed Angie's car to meet with Brian, so that was my first experience driving in LA alone. I did miss my GPS, but it was fine. I swung over to North Hollywood to meet Brian, then up the 405, over to Simi Valley (very beige and develop-y) and back into Calabasas, making a giant square.
Watched "Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny" with Pam, Dave and Angie, and declared it hilarious.
Angie and Dave's beloved cat Hartman went to the vet while we were there, because she'd been throwing up a lot. More than usual, which I guess is also a lot. Vets have always been unconcerned. This time, they did an x-ray and saw...a coin in there. Or a button. They weren't sure, but surgery was scheduled for the next day. Turns out it was a dime, and it could have been in there, literally, for YEARS. It was very worn thin, with Roosevelt's face eroded. She's doing well now and it will be interesting to see if this changes her. Will she gain weight or change her behavior? She may have had a low grade stomachache for years, so this will be interesting.
Other thoughts:
Those are the facts. Emotionally, I ran and run the gamut. Lots to think about.

Other thoughts:
- I heard a lot of people complaining about how it's "freezing" when it's in the 50s and 60s, yet they refuse to dress appropriately so they'd be warmer.
- My family doesn't eat much. Sometimes they (at least my brother) simply forget to eat. Apparently I need to follow their lead, because they're all thin. I was very aware of that.
- I haven't yet come across, in all my times there, the phoniness that supposedly pervades the area and the industry. Then again, I'm not hanging with poseurs, or Linday's entourage, so I'm not surprised.
Those are the facts. Emotionally, I ran and run the gamut. Lots to think about.
